Aquitania - 'The Ship Beautiful'
With elegant and beautifully executed interiors Aquitania was quickly named “ the ship beautiful”. On 1 April 1948 R.M.S. Aquitania was returned to Cunard with the drab grey paint from WW2 covered with sparkling new company colours. Aquitania was chartered by the Canadian Government to carry Canadian emigrants between Southampton and Halifax. On November 14th. 1949 she started her last of 443 round trip voyages on the North Atlantic. On board was 14 year old David Smith travelling with his Aunt. When the ship returned to Southampton, Cunard withdrew her from service. In early 1950 Aquitania - “ the ship beautiful” was broken up for scrap in Scotland. - Image Sources: Cunard Poster - Dec 26 -"Ship Beautiful!" Cunard's Last Four Stacker, RMS Aquitania! -
